What Luke offers

Luke teaches English to foreign speakers:

• face to face in a classroom OR online
• in a 1:1 or group setting
• to all levels: elementary, intermediate and advanced and those levels in between

His goal is to tailor his lessons to the individuals attending and help them develop their English as quickly as possible whilst having fun.

Luke is an experienced software consultant who has always had a passion for languages and gained his CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification in 2022 at The English Language Centre in Reading.

It was there whilst training that he was reminded by the main course tutor Rachel Thake why he wanted to get involved in teaching English - a desire to help others to develop their skills to communicate effectively using English. After all, for anyone coming from a non English-speaking country, the most important tool they can have in life is to be able to integrate into any new community that they live in. Communication is absolutely fundamental to this. 

Career background

Luke has many years experience working in software development, building complex systems in corporates such as SAP, Nokia and British Airways as well as working for smaller organisations such as CrowdCharge and NetDespatch. As a leader of teams within these organisations he has always prioritised building rapport with others to create excellent working relationships and has worked with people from all backgrounds and cultures.

During his time at British Airways he was able to travel widely and experience wonderful places all over the world. He believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to a good education and if learning English will unlock someone's potential, he is passionate to be involved in that regardless of the person's cultural background.

In more recent years he has become interested in green technology and the transition of the world away from its reliance on fossil fuels and currently works for Jaguar Land Rover in Electrification Services. He is fond of doing long distance travel by train or in his EV.

Passion for languages

From a young age doing French, German and Latin at school, he always had a deep interest in languages. Having also studied some Russian part-time during his A-level years, he left school determined to learn more languages and discover new cultures.

He went on to meet his wife in Northern Europe and take on the challenge of learning her language - one of the few Balto-Finnic languages in Europe - Finnish. This, he now considers to be his strongest foreign language. Throughout his adult life, he has also regularly taken evening classes in Spanish.

This deep exposure to languages has led to a greater understanding of the grammar of his own mother tongue and helps to put him in the place of the learner.
